#3AlbumsILove: Share your three most favourite albums

2017-04-24

We all listen to so many diff kinda music. Everyone's liking is different, and rightfully so. Music is an extension of the person we are. Whether you play yourself, and listen, the kind of music you engage with tells a lot about you.

I wanted to create a way to be thankful for music we have in our life. An album (not a single) that has changed your life, or changed your perspective about music, has been ground-breaking as far as you're concerned. And its your life companion. Think of it as those three albums, if you ever got stranded in an island with, will make you complete. I am sure some of you can fill a dozen may be 50 or hundred albums, yet I want to think of only three.

Share it on with #hashtag #3AlbumsILove on Facebook:#3AlbumsILove, or Twitter:3AlbumsILove, or Instagram:#3AlbumsILove. If possible to tag the musicians, composers on those messages, pls do it.

Also, ask at least 3 of your friends to do the same!

My #3AlbumsILove are these:

  1. Sampooran by Mekaal Hasan Band
  2. Beete Pal by Nandini Srikar
  3. Avial - debut album

#Learn2Play ★★★ “Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahunga” (Half Girlfriend) chords – Guitar Bollywood Lesson

2017-04-22

#Learn2Play: Phir Bhi Tumko Chahoonga was released 5 days ago, and in 5 days, it has raked in 12Million views (as I am writing). Sung by Arijit Singh and Shashaa Tirupati, and music by Mithoon, one of the most underrated music directors of our time. Arijit's part is so well sung, it sticks to your brain, and keeps repeating inside. The emotion he is able to bring out in his singing is unparalleled.

While the song is fairly easy, but still 3-star rating is because you can mix some plucking along with strumming the chords. Feel free to ask any question about some chord shapes (like Fsus2), I can let you know.

Credits:
Song - Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahunga
Film: Half Girlfriend
Singers - Arijit Singh & Shashaa Tirupati

#RantsNRaves: No LipSync please!

2017-04-12

Hope this is taken in right spirit and doesn't offend anyone. I had to say this because I feel strongly about it. I have written about it here earlier as well.

Its not always the fault of the singers to be honest. Sometimes, they are pressurized by the organizers to do a flashy show! The flash is all that organizers want - they don't want to deal with the hassle of the live music logistics. But I think the ultimate power is in our hand, we the listeners. I wish we as audience need to grow as well, identify the difference between live, minus track performances, and Karaoke shows! If we demand for the artists we admire to sing live, no organizers can put up a pre-recorded show. When you watch the so-called live awards shows, almost all the performances there are pre-recorded.

Ultimately, Karma is a beach! You try to pull a fake one, then when Karma pulls a fake one on you, you can't complain.

Do you have any anecdotes, experience with such shows? Pls share them in comments.

#Learn2Play ★★★ “Banjaara” (Ek Villain) chords – Guitar Bollywood Lesson

2017-04-07

"Banjaara" from the film "Ek Villain" is certainly one of the most soulful love songs ever sung by Mohammed Irfan and composed by Mithoon. The song is in C#m, so it maybe little tiring to play the entire song on all bar chords. And there are a lot of chord sequences to remember. You can easily move the scale up by one semitone, to make it Dm. The song may go higher, but playing will be easier. For all bar chords versioon, i may give 3.5 or even 4.

Credits:
Song: BANJAARA
Movie: EK VILLAIN
Singer: MOHD. IRFAN
Lyrics: MITHOON
Music: MITHOON

Ease of playing: ★★★☆☆ (1: Easiest, 5: Toughest)

#ArtistClips: Warren Mendonsa guitar solo on Pinjra

2017-04-05

So many guitar solos are played on Coke Studio sessions, and elsewhere, but some stay with you. Its all about the soul of the solo, and not flurry of notes, or count of notes per second, or even technicalities for that matter. Warren Mendonsa, aka @Blackstratblues has always come across as one of the best guitarists in India today, for the choice of his phrasings, improvisation, and soul. Listen to this.

The full song from Coke Studio MTV is here. Another aspect of the song that also shines is the vocal harmony section in the chorus part. No one lays a better vocal harmony than Clinton Cerejo. The Gospel influence shows in the richness of the vocals layers. Its amazing to say the least. While I am on the topic of vocal harmony, I have to mention that one other person, who also produces some of the best vocal harmony is Nandini Srikar. I have written about her in this blog elsewhere.

The power of Imagination: Ehsaan Noorani TEDx talk

Ehsaan Noorani comes across as one of the most down-to-earth, warm-hearted, logical, grounded person, let alone a very creative and successful music director. In this recent TEDx talk at Bangalore, he shares his thoughts about power of imagination.

We are all in an information age, where we have way too much information available to us at our fingertips. So do our children grow up in an environment of plenty. The instant gratification is a by-product of the plenty. One of the vivid memories of my childhood I have is the bus or train rides. I didn't have any device with me back then. So I just looked thru the window! Passing roads, other trains, motorcycles, cities, villages, sky, forest, river, bridges! I just imagined, made stories in my mind. The stories might have melted as soon as I reached my destination. But I just imagined a myriad of things.

The power imagination that has led Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy to have composed an album like Dil Chahta Hai in straight 3 days. I have read elsewhere, they did the same for the music of one of my fav albums Rock On straight in 5 days. The examples of power of imagination and its by-product, Creativity are countless.

Thank you Ehsaan for sharing your thoughts!

#ArtistClips: Vasuda Sharma

2017-04-01

Not much a fan of Kazoo, the noise making apparatus, let alone call it a musical instrument. Came across few videos of Vasuda Sharma, who can actually make music out of it.

The entire video produced by MyQyuki is here. And its really cool. Vasuda plays all the instruments, and sings all the parts, in a loop based gear. She creates and adds loops as layers. Turns on certain loop and turns off, and creates a perfectly nice mashup of two all time classics, Colonial Cousin's (Hariharan and Lesle Lewis) Sa-Ni-Dha-Pa and George Michael's Freedom.

This is not the first time I have seen Vasuda Sharama rock the Kazoo - in an earlier #VloopMash (as she has coined the hashtag) she also played a mean Kazoo solo. This is another incredibly peppy sounding mashup of Ude Dil Befikre and Didi. (Jump onto 2:44 on the following video).

Music of Poorna

I may have said this elsewhere, the music of Poorna is special to me, not only because the music is great. All of their music videos feature the real music artists. Often times, when people are listening to the promos of a film, and its music, they picture the actors miming to the songs! Here its not so. The footages from the film mixed with the studio footages. So be it Arijit Singh singing, Salim Merchant playing the Roli Seaboard or Darshan Doshi playing the drums, you see it all.

The first song: Kuchh Parbat Hillayen, an uplifting song, by Arijit Singh. Love the song for its rhythm section, including the alternate chord voicings during the chorus part. Here's the music video.

On a selfish note, here's a cover version of mine, the guitar chord lesson for the same song.

Poori Qaayaanat, is a song I already wrote about. Sung by Raj Pandit and Vishal Dadlani, this is one of songs of Salim-Sulaiman, that was done way back in Coke Studio. The music video follows.

Lastly, the intimate version of Kuch Parbat Hilayen by the composer Salim Merchant himself! Yet another brilliant music video, that lets us get a feel of the actual recording session.

There is another brilliant song, Baabul Mora, beautifully sung by Arijit Singh, but I believe, the official video is yet to release. I thank the filmmaker Rahul Bose to have released the music video like this.

Lastly the full music credits:

Music Composed & Produced by - Salim-Sulaiman
Lyrics - Amitabh Bhattacharya
Singer - Arijit Singh
Additional Music Producer - Raj Pandit
Backing Vocals - Raj Pandit, Crystal Sequeira, Gwen Dias
Guitars - Nyzel D'lima
Bass - Rushad Mistry
Keyboards - Salim Merchant, Jarvis Menezes
ROLI Seaboard - Salim Merchant
Drums - Darshan Doshi
Marimba, Djembe - Sulaiman Merchant
Recorded at Blue Productions by - Aftab Khan, Raj Pandit
Drums Recorded at The Click
Mixed at Blue Productions by - Aftab Khan
Mastered at Headroom Studio by - Aftab Khan

On yet another personal brag-point, I met with the musicians behind all these tracks, Darshan, Nyzel, Rushad, Jarvis at an event in Bangalore.
